Alaskan Winds will once again be holding their virtual version of the Iditarod and we have been invited to participate.
For those that are not familiar with the Iditarod, it is the worlds biggest dog sled race. It starts in Anchorage and ends 1000 miles late in Nome. Mushers from all over the world paticipate in this and the race usually takes anywhere from one to two weeks to run.
Alaskan Winds simulates the operation of the Iditarod Air Force which is a group of volunteer bush pilots that fly everything from dog food to hale bails and even injured dogs along the race trail. The way the AW operation works is that you pick a real musher that you want to support and then you track that mushers progress via various websites and fly on a daily basis to the checkpoints that the real musher has made it to. AW even has custom scenery that recreates all of the checkpoints. Last year there was even an ABL script that you could run that would do things like provide directions to the next checkpoint, provide backgroud sound like people talking and dogs barking, and it would even allow you to play a small selection of music while your were flying.
I have participated the last two years and will participate again this year. I highly encourage everone to participate, it is a lot of fun.

/frank i flew dogs last yr it is a differant deal all together.one thing all your members need to know alaska has some of the toughest places to fly into and the wind up here blows at least an average of 4 to 12 knots daily.cross wind landings and landing on ice for real is a challenge in itself.ill get some pics of merill field to you soon.kevin naeb

2K4 flew for Alaskan Winds.
2K5 flew for Timberwolf.
This year 2006 Im flying for the Aurora Air Service brand.

I'll be driving a O2 Bird-Dog in full U.S. Airforce colors in honor of a small group of folks (from all branches/ and Nationalities...including Canberra Pilots from Australia) who are forgotten/unknown/taken for granted....HEROS. Many never made it home in order to save others.

The race starts tomorrow so if anyone else is interested in participating this year, please go sign up at the AW forums as soon as possible. I cannot stress enought how much fun this event is. Please give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

I know this post is ancient, but if any of you ever get a chance to come see the start or finish, or both, of the Iditarod, I highly recommend it. I hope there is another virtual Iditarod this year so I can help!

I am sure that Alaskan Winds will be hosting another virtual Iditarod next year and if they do, AAS will definitely be participating.
