A good business acquaintance of mine was involved in the coordination of a new business conference - I was part of the planning. We estimated about 150 people coming for the first event. He was in charge of the hotel reservations, and acquired a block of rooms for the group.
This was the first conference of its type, and while we felt our first annual event was successful, we fell a little short of the mark for room reservations. We had about 100 people, not 150. The hotel however was demanding that he pay for the entire block of rooms- that it was in the contract.
"Fine", he said. "If I have to pay for the rooms, then I'm going to USE them. All of them. I have a large van, and in a matter of about 30 minutes, I can fill up those rooms with the homeless people I saw downtown this morning. I'm sure they would appreciate a nice warm bed for the evening".
"But-- you can't DO that!!!", the hotel said.
"Watch me", was the reply.
The 'contract' was rapidly amended, and he did not have to have the company pay for the unused rooms.
