I drug my sorry carcass out of the sack this morning to learn that Lance was about 8 miles out of Nome. I grabbed a quick sandwich and fired up the beast so I could maybe get to the finish line along with him... Weather isn't too bad, YET! Looks like a squeeze play up ahead... rocks below, clouds above... I started to put some distance between me and the rocks... I found a clearing and tried to get above the goo... Nothing but white! Eyes on the gauges, stay upright and keep climbing... Finally, some blue sky at about 9500'... Well, it was mostly blue... Eventually, I had to get back down when I got close to Nome... down to fog & snow... Hey mom, I'm Nome (the booze has thickened my tongue somewhat:D) I hear Lance is close to the finish line, so I'm hurrying to make my pass... Target in sight... Goin' ballistic over the finish line... just missed his crossing it by a few minutes... Behaving myself again... refueling for the trip back (after the champagne, of course!)... The 2008 Iditarod Champion... Lance Mackey!
