Alaskan Winds will be hosting their annual virtual support of the Iditarod dog sled race. AAS and Timberwolf Aviation have been invited to join them this year. If you are going to participate in this event, please go to the Alaskan Winds forums and register as a forum member. You are in no way joining Alaskan Winds by registering at the forums so please don't decline to particpate because you think that you will be joining anothe VA. You are simply registering at their forum so that you can fully participate in this Joint Special Event. flightclub.proboards25.com/You will find the Iditarod information in the Iditarod 2005 board in the Special Events Section. You will fly the AAS aircraft of your choice and post PIREPS over at AW but feel free to post a duplicate PIREP here if you wish so that those that choose not to participate can see what they are missing.

Just a reminder, if you are going to participate in this event, please register at the Alaskan Winds forums and then add yourself to the Iditarod 2005 roster.
This event is a lot of fun and I encourage everyone who has the time to participate.

Just in case anyone was curious about what kind of aircraft the real Iditarod Air Force pilots fly. Here is the breakdown for 2005.
Aeronca - 1 Cessna 170 - 1 Cessna 172 - 1 Cessna 180 - 13 Cessna 182 - 1 Cessna 185 - 8 Cessna 208 - 1 Piper PA-20/22 - 1
By far the most popular aircraft is the Cessna 180 and Cessna 185.

I don't suppose that any of the popular ones are freeware?

Nope. Abacus has a good Cessna 185 for $10.00. IMHO, it is will worth the $10.00. You get a wheeled and float version and multiple repaints.

If I could be sure I'd have the time, I'd run the SuperPacer. Man I love that little plane ;D ;D ;D
It sports AAS livery and the tundra tires should be good to land on snow if it's not too deep (I'd guess a foot or so based on my reading).
While I know nothing of this event from a support pilot perspective, it would seem that a ski equipped plane would make the most sense.

I'm not sure what the rules will be this year but last year you only had to commit to flying every three days. It is more realistic if you can fly each day but they realize that not everyone can do this, thus the three day thing. I would assume that it will be the same this year. If you would like to give it a shot, go ahead and sign up and if you can't complete it, it's no big deal. The Super Pacer will be fine for the event. Basically, the real pilots are flying supplies for the mushers, things like, hay for the dogs to sleep on, food for the dogs, evacuation of dogs that are injured, etc....

Is there a good config file that allows for payload? I could only find one entry for the pilot - and after I did the workie on the Herkie, I'm not at all excited about the prospect of monkeying around with payload again (even though there won't be as much to worry about).

If you are wanting the load station for the Super Pacer, here they are.
station_load.0 = "190, 0.74, 0, -0.38, Pilot" station_load.1 = "190, 0.74, 0, -0.38, Front Passenger" station_load.2 = "170, -2.15, 0, -0.60, Rear Pass 1" station_load.3 = "170, -2.15, 0, -0.60, Rear Pass 2" station_load.4 = "50, -3.52, 0, -0.56, Baggage"
Make sure that the
max_number_of_stations=
is set to at least 5. I have mine set to 20 but the original entry is set to 1 which will only allow one of the five load stations to appear.

Sorry I haven't been much for emails lately - I've been out the last 3 days with a NASTY flu bug that's got me laid out here at home.
Assuming any of us take part - where do we record it? On the AAS forum or the AW forum?

For any of the Iditarod flights, please file a PIREP, as described in Idirarod Operations Manual at AW, with AW and then you can file your normal AAS style Pirep here at AAS in the Iditarod PIREPS board.
You don't have to make a Logbook entry at AW, just file the e-mail PIREP there. Your forum PIREP at AAS will substitute for the Logbook entry at AW.

Here is what I plan on using for the Iditarod. I took the AAS Repaint of the Beaver (which already had the Iditarod 2005 on it) and used the idea of Jens from Alaskan Airways and added my name as the captain, the musher I'm supporting (as well as his number). I will probably add some of my Musher's sponsors on the plane as soon as I can get them to work right. I will use both the ski version and the tundra version of the plane so I can land on any terrain.

Looks like we got ourselves another painter, Pappy! Nice job on the textures! Great minds must think alike, because here's mine.... "LUCKY ONE THREE" (Ramy Brooks is the #13 musher ;D ;D ;D) Let's see if we can't make 13 a lucky number this year! Good luck to the AAS Iditarod Air Force!

;DI modified my last post with images from my, hopefully, complete Iditarod plane. I added a couple of sponsors, the husky on the tail, and the flag ribbon on the front. I did the modification on the last post in hopes that it will help keep from having two posts with images.
As far are repainting, I'm just starting out and learning how to do it. I can do simple repaints and as long as the template is user friendly I can do repaints.
