Well the Iditarod Dog Sled Race is only 2 months away. Alaskan Winds is once again hosting a virtual version of the race and AAS has been invited to participate again. If you have not participated in this event before, I highly encourage you to do so. It really is a lot of fun. I will post more information as it becomes available. If you have any questions about this event, please ask. I would really like to have at least a couple of you participate along with me in this event. Once you try it, I guarantee that you won't want to wait until next year to do it again.

No sir. It is an offline event. Now there will be some folks that choose to fly online but there is no requirement to do so.
Basically, you choose a real life Musher to "support" and then you follow the race stats and fly to the checkpoints that you Musher has reached. I usually try to fly every day and stay one checkpoint ahead of my Musher but that is just how I do it. You do not have to fly everyday but it is suggested that you try to fly at least every three days, if you can, over the course of the race.
AW has scenery for each of the checkpoints and some of those checkpoints have AAS buildings or tents in them.

Sounds good to me.
I have always wondered what it all was about.
How do you pronounce the name?
Is there a site I can visit to get an understanding of it?
Tom will you fly Fixed or Rotary?
Frank can you give me an idea of how long each leg is please?
Cheers WM

Pronounced Eye...dit...er...rod
Hmmm... you know I prefer rotors over planks... if given the choice, I'll be beating the air into submission ;D ;D ;D ;D
Frank... don't they have a fixed set of birds to pick from or is it pilot's choice?

Here is the URL for the new Alaskan Winds forums. alaskanwinds.proboards84.com/index.cgiYou will need to register at their forums and all memberships need approval so it may take a little time before you account is approved but it should be approved within 24 hours. You don't have to worry, by registering at their forums you will not be joining the VA, just their forums. Once you are able to log on, please check the Special Events board and will find all of the current Iditarod stuff there. It is not complete yet as things are just getting started. There is a Start Here post that you will want to checkout first. It has several links to real world Iditarod sites that you can check out to get a better idea about what the real race is about. You will also need to go to the Pilot Registration post and announce which Musher that you will be supporting. You will need to pick a Musher that has not been picked yet. I am not sure what the aircraft rules for this year will be yet but traditionally, aircraft has been pilots choice. I would ask that you fly a company aircraft/helo or if you are going to fly a personal aircaft, I would ask that it at least have the company logo on it. Last year, I flew my personal C185 that has both the AW and AAS logo on the tail. This year I may fly the AAS C185. If you want to check out the PIREPS from last year, here is the URL to the Logbooks post at the old AW forums. flightclub.proboards25.com/index.cgi?board=iditarod2006&action=display&thread=1141527394Here is the link to the Logbooks from 2005. flightclub.proboards25.com/index.cgi?board=iditarod2005&action=display&thread=1106457082Distances between check points are pretty short. I think that the longest one is around 112 miles and the shortest is about 18 miles.

OK! I'm in and I've registered with the name of the musher. When the race starts, do we file PIREPs here, at AW or both places? My dogsled dude... #38, Jeremy Kelly

I would say to file PIREPS at both places. Last year, I would file my PIREP at AW then just copy and paste it over here.
